Cloud Storage Schnelleinstieg

As cloud storage, the LRZ operates highly available, largely scalable, high-performance storage systems in access-secured, fully air-conditioned data center rooms (private cloud). Data security is ensured by multi-level backup procedures. With the cloud storage, the LRZ offers central, secure file services to employees and students of the Munich universities and other institutions that belong to the LRZ's authorized clientele. Cloud storage can be accessed within the Munich academic network by directly mounting it in the user's respective file system and/or using a web interface.

Authorized users:

A prerequisite for use is registration in the LRZ directory service. The corresponding entries are available for the identifiers of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU), the Technische Universität München (TUM) and the Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften (BAdW). By using the LRZ Cloud Storage, the user agrees to the guidelines for the use of the LRZ Cloud Storage.

The cloud storage can be accessed in two ways. Either by directly mounting the storage in the user's respective file system and/or via a browser using the so-called WebDisk. A mobile version of the WebDisk is also available for most touchpads and smartphones.

Cloud storage covers three different areas:

  • Personal Cloud Storage: Personal storage for employees and students with exclusive access rights.
  • Institutional Cloud Storage: shared storage for facilities, faculties, institutes and projects (access depending on rights assignment)
  • Temporary Cloud Storage: Temporary storage for the exchange of data with sliding deletion (access for all)

Cloud Storage - getting started:

  1. Follow the usage guidelines when dealing with cloud storage.
  2. Decide which cloud storage variant (Personal, Institutional or Temporary Cloud Storage) you want to use.
  3. Mount the cloud storage as a drive on your computer (within the Munich Scientific Network):
    1. Accessing the Cloud Storage using Windows
    2. Accessing the Cloud Storage using Linux
    3. Accessing the Cloud Storage using macOS
    4. Accessing the Cloud Storage via WebDAV protocol
  4. Connection from outside the Munich science network:
    1. Access via Internet browser using the "Webdisk"
    2. Access via Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Integrated Simple ARchive (ISAR) Cloud Storage:

With the Integrated Simple ARchive (ISAR) Cloud Storage, partial administrators of the MWN-ADS can move data from the cloud storage nas.mwn.de to an online archiving area. The data on the ISAR Cloud Storage is kept online for ten years and is also backed up in the archive and backup system of the LRZ. The ISAR Cloud Storage is not a substitute for a backup of servers or file repositories! For this purpose, please use the archive and backup system of the LRZ.
