Welche Aufgaben hat ein Master User?
In contrast to the head of the institution, who acts as the client of a project with his signature, the master users of the project are the technical contact persons for both the institution members and the LRZ. Each project must have at least one master user; to handle substitution situations, two master users per project are common; in exceptional cases, there may also be additional master users. From the LRZ's point of view, all Master Users of a project have "equal rights", i.e. no distinction is made between 1st and 2nd Master User with regard to rank or competence or alphabetical order of names.
It is the responsibility of the head of the institution to determine who becomes the master user of a project. The head of the institution notifies the LRZ of new master users, initially via the project application, later by sending an informal e-mail to the respective advisor (if you do not know your advisor or his/her e-mail address, please read Who is my LRZ advisor?) The new Master User will receive a welcome email from the LRZ with a short summary of his tasks. At the same time, he or she will be given authorisation to use the Master User services in the IDM portal.
As a Master User, you are the contact person for the users in your institution as well as for the LRZ for all topics related to LRZ user administration:
- The LRZ sends current information to all master users as required, in which, for example, maintenance times for LRZ services are announced. Please pass on relevant information to your affected users appropriately.
- Members of your institution will contact you if, for example, they require an LRZ account, wish to have additional authorisations for an existing account or have forgotten their password.
For more detailed modalities, please refer to the article Tasks of Master-Users.
The most important tool available to you for managing the accounts in your project is the Master User Services in the LRZ IDM portal, which you can use to distribute the quotas allocated for the project (number of accounts, number per service, storage space, etc.) to your users. If you have any questions about the procedure and if you need to increase your project quota, you can contact your LRZ advisor at any time - see also How should I communicate with my LRZ advisor?
When assigning a new account, please note in principle that you must enter the contact details of the new user. Please keep these contact details as up-to-date as possible, e.g. in case of name changes or new telephone numbers. Every user to whom you assign a new account must first change the start password he received from you to a password known only to him in the IDM portal. When doing so, he will also be asked to accept the LRZ usage guidelines. Only then can he use LRZ services.
Accounts that are no longer required must be deleted. Different cases must be distinguished, e.g. depending on whether the user leaves the Munich university environment or moves to another university. Please refer to the entries How can I delete an account? and May selected former employees of my institution keep their account?
