Javora – a Serious Game about the Fundamentals of Java Programming

This paper introduces a prototype for the serious game Ja-
vora which aims to teach the fundamentals of the Java programming
language to beginners. In a 3D world, the player has to solve puzzles
from the first-person perspective in order to progress. The learning con-
tents are part of the main game mechanic which is the ability to ex-
tract codewalls from objects in the environment. These codewalls are a
replacement for a standard editor in which players usually code in pro-
gramming games and applications. To further the immersion of the game
the player is set into a dysfunctional world where objects are made of
code and, with the help of a companion called Coco, they try to find
the creator of the world in order to repair it for good. The first itera-
tion of the game has been tested in multiple evaluations and has now
entered its second iteration phase. The first iteration is also available
under https://theialys.itch.io/javora

Fighting Unhealthy Video Game Control Methods: The Claw Grip

The claw grip is a specific gripping technique to hold a video game controller. With severe consequences for the player, this thesis's objective is to evaluate different input techniques with a focus on providing valuable alternatives. As video games have become more complex over the years, controllers need to adapt. The study focuses on two methods mitigating the use of the claw grip. Additional provision of buttons and the extension of camera controls via motion input have been researched. Three use cases for the claw grip are determined and mirrored in a video game implementation. A user study was conducted with 24 participants, each subjected to the test game, using the provided input technique. Objective data was collected by measuring performance, while subjective data was evaluated through questionnaires. The results validate additional buttons as an alternative input technique to damaging gripping techniques. The data contributes to the further development of video game controllers as a means to heighten video game experiences.

Supporting Cognitive and Physical Well-Being of Seniors with SBC-Based Smart Mirror and IoT

The aging population faces growing challenges in maintaining independence and managing
daily activities due to health decline, cognitive impairments, and limited familiarity with
modern technology. This thesis investigates the application of SBC-based systems, IoT tech-
nologies, and conversational AI to address these challenges. A smart mirror prototype and
associated systems are developed to provide personalised reminders about hydration, future
appointments as well as ventilation of living space. Furthermore, the work explores AR
navigation tool and games for psychical and cognitive engagement. By addressing hardware
limitations, interoperability issues, and user acceptance, this work contributes to the research
about accessible and scalable technology solutions for seniors.

Authentication/Authorization in Context-Sensitive Publish/Subscribe Communication for Mixed Reality Systems

Publish/Subscribe (Pub/Sub) Communication has proven highly useful for collaborative real-time Mixed Reality (MR) applications due to its low latency and scalability through the decoupling of participants. The Ubi-Interact (Ubii) framework is designed for any contextual, ubiquitous distributed system architecture with a focus on MR and extends the conventional Pub/Sub approach by allowing both publisher and subscriber to add arbitrary conditions that determine who is notified. To further enhance security and privacy, Ubii should be extended with authentication and authorization mechanisms. For this purpose, authentication methods adapted to MR devices are examined, and options for authorization and access control are presented.
