07.03.2023 – Accounting and Billing for the Cloud service
We informed all master users of all LRZ projects that have the permission to use the Compute Cloud that we work on an accounting and billing system for this service.
The following mail has been sent to all master users:
Date: Tue, 7 Mar 2023 14:26:49 +0100 To: All master users Subject: Accounting and billing for LRZ Compute Cloud Dear $masteruser, today I am writing because you are the master user of the following $num LRZ project$plural having permissions to use the LRZ Compute Cloud: $project_list As you may have heard LRZ wants to start charging money for the usage of the Compute Cloud service. This idea is around for several years now and this mail is a heads-up that we currently work on a system to collect usage data and implement (still missing) components needed for the accounting and billing process. We know the lack of an overview of resources currently used (and charged for) on a per-project basis as well as the possibility to limit costs in any way. These are points we currently focus on. Besides that we try to ensure that the fundamental data needed for accounting and billing is complete and consistent before sending out any invoices or even cost estimations. To give you a rough idea this table will provide you with the costs when using a particular flavor for one complete day. These costs vary depending on the usage class ("Nutzerklasse") your project belongs to. [...] An overview of the available flavors and the associated virtual hardware can be found on our website: https://doku.lrz.de/display/PUBLIC/FAQ#FAQ-Flavors There are still some open points and although I am not able to provide you with a detailed roadmap or a particular date when we start charging you for your resource consumption you should prepare yourself that the free usage of the compute cloud service will come to an end. We hope that we can still offer free access to a limited amount of resources in the future. As soon as we have more information we will let you know. I am aware that this mail might raise questions we cannot answer appropriately at the moment. There are still many points that need to be discussed LRZ-internally. For that reason we are open and thankful for any feedback regarding this topic. I will keep you up to date as soon I have any news to share. Best regards
02.02.2021 – 05.02.2021 Power Outage
UPDATED
All cloud compontens (and the VMs) will be shut down.
We expect the Cloud to be fully operational during Friday, 5.2.2021.
The cloud has returned to operation.

Unfortunately, the time of the power interruption has changed due to external delays by 1 day. Sorry für the information that reached us today. To keep the downtime as short as possible, we will shut down the cloud one day later that mentioned in our previous mail on Tuesday, 02.02.2021, afternoon at 16:00 CET. We expect that the cloud will become available again on Friday, 05.02.2021. Sorry for any inconveniences, best regards, Niels
LRZ Compute Cloud Users, in the meantime the time window of the power interruption has been narrowed down to: Tuesday, 2.2.2021 - Wednesday, 3.2.2021 We will start shutting down the cloud system on Monday, 1.2.2021, afternoon around 17:00 (5 PM). 26.05.2020 – 29.05.2020 Maintenance Window
Alle VMs werden in diesem Zeitraum heruntergefahren

09.07.2019 – 12.07.2019 Maintenance Window
- MTU issue: The default Networks MWN and internet public to all user have been configured incorrectly .At the moment the MTU size of a network interface attached to a VM is set to 1450. Docker and Windows "do not like this". → we will migrate all current network interfaces to a copy of the internet and MWN networks which will finally run a MTU size of 1500.
- Impact to the users of the VM → all MAC addresses inside the VM will change, but all IP addresses (internal/floating) will stay the same and work → This is considered to be be OK.
- All VMs will be rebooted due to a necessary firmware upgrade of the hardware and the need to partially recable the hardware.
