Remote Visualisation 2021

The LRZ Remote Visualisation aims at providing users with access to high-end hardware for visualisation tasks. All rendering is done on the compute nodes at the LRZ and the resulting images are streamed to the user's client machine.
The Remote Visualisation can be accessed using a web browser, eliminating the need for any client-side software setup.
Note:
For the time being, the new Remote Visualisation is reachable only from within the MWN!
Getting Started
The main entry point for the LRZ Remote Visulisation can be found at https://rv.lrz.de/
This landing page will provide you with a list of available nodes as well as the occupation status for each node. Please note that at the current time only a single user can access a node at any time.
Clicking the "Access" button of any available node will redirect you to the login page for the specific node.
Node Login
Logging into a node of the Remote Visualization is a 2-step process.
NoMachine Login
First, you will be prompted to log into the NoMachine Remote Desktop:
Please use your LRZ account and password to login to the Remote Desktop.
After the login NoMachine will display a number of pages with tutorials/hints as well as some initial setup options. These pages can be hidden for future logins by activating the "do not show again" option at the bottom of the page.
Any settings prompted here may be changed at any time in the settings while logged into NoMachine for a specific node.
Note
You are now logged into a specific node of the LRZ Remote Visualisation and have exclusive access to this node!
Ubuntu Login
Once you are successfully logged into NoMachine you can access systems. All nodes are currently running Ubuntu 18.04. Initially you will be shown the standard start screen with a system clock. You can access the login screen by hitting 'Return' on your keyboard.
Here you are asked to enter your credentials again. This will log you into the actual Linux system running on the specific node.
Hint
When entering your credentials to log into Ubuntu you can change your keyboard layout. The option can be found in the top-right corner:

Logging out
To log out, first access the NoMachine menu. The menu can be accessed using one of 2 ways:
- Move the mouse to the top right corner of your Ubuntu screen. A "foldover" will appear that can be clicked to access the menu:
- Use the keyboard shortcut (default: Ctrl+Alt+0) to open the menu
From the NoMachine menu select the "Connection" submenu. This submenu will show you connection statistics as well as the option to log out of your session.
Hint
The settings menu can not only be used to log out, but also to change a number of settings for the NoMachine Remote Desktop, including the corner where the "foldover" for the menu will appear (called "page-peel" by NoMachine) and the keyboard shortcut for the menu access.

Data Access
The new RVS currently only provides access to the Linux Cluster home directories.
Any other DSS based storage containers - including the new DSS-based Linux Cluster project containers - can also be accessed using RVS. To do so, the data curator of the DSS container has to apply the LRZ Remote Visualisation Container Config. The general procedure is described here (section 12).
