VPN in the Munich Scientific Network (MWN)

Was ist VPN?

VPN steht für "Virtual Private Network" oder "Virtuelles Privates Netz". Mit einem VPN lässt sich über ein offenes, ungeschütztes Netz (Internet, WLAN) ein sicheres Teilnetz aufbauen, in dem die Kommunikation gegen Abhören und Zugriffe durch fremde Teilnehmer abgeschottet ist. Erreicht wird dies durch Tunneln des Datenverkehrs vom Endgerät zu einen VPN-Server. Dort müssen die verschlüsselten Verbindungen beim Aufbau authentisiert und autorisiert werden.

What is VPN?

VPN stands for “virtual private network”. A VPN can be used to build a secure sub-network over an open, unprotected network (Internet, wireless network). Communication in this sub-network is protected against tapping and access by third-party participants. This is achieved by tunneling the data traffic via a VPN server using data encryption. Connections to this server have to be authenticated when set up.

VPN-Nutzung im Münchner Wissenschaftsnetz (MWN)

Eine VPN-Verbindung gestattet Zugriff auf verschiedene Dienste im MWN. Wenn Sie folgende Dienste nutzen wollen, benötigen Sie VPN:

• MWN- und Internetzugang über das vom LRZ betreute WLAN "lrz".
• MWN- und Internetzugang über Kabel an öffentlichen Anschlussdosen.
• Zugangsbeschränkte, interne MWN-Dienste (zum Beispiel: Online-Zeitschriften der Münchner Hochschulbibliotheken, Remote Update der Sophos Anti-Viren-Software) über fremde Internet-Anbieter oder von Bewohnern von Studentenwohnheimen.

Zur Nutzung von VPN-Verbindungen sind eine gültige Nutzerkennung und die Installation eines Client-Programms nötig. Die VPN-Server-Cluster im MWN unterstützen zwei Protokolle, SSL/DTLS mit dem eduVPN-Client oder dem AnyConnect Client und IPsec mit XAUTH mit einem IPsec-Client. eduVPN und AnyConnect verwenden verschiedene Sever. 

VPN use in the Munich Scientific Network (MWN)

A VPN connection enables access to various MWN services. You have to establish a VPN connection if you wish to use the following services:

• Access via the WLAN connections in the MWN that are managed by the LRZ
• Use of public connection points for mobile computers in the MWN
• Use of access-restricted, internal MWN services (examples: online journals of the Munich university libraries, remote update of Sophos anti-virus software) via third-party Internet providers or by inhabitants of student halls of residence

To use VPN connections, a valid username and the installation of a client program are required. The VPN server clusters in the MWN supports two protocols, SSL/DTLS with the eduVPN client or AnyConnect client and IPsec with XAUTH with the IPsec client. eduVPN and AnyConnect however use different servers.
